EVENTS UPDATES

Hamilton Workingmen’s Club Charity Day

11th - 16th October

MS Waikato was chosen by the Hamilton Workingmen’s Club to be beneficiaries for their bi-annual Charity Day.

The Charity Day week was held from Tuesday 11th - Sunday 16th October and consisted of a week of selling raffles and a Charity Auction on the Sunday.

The HWMC has approximately 6000 members and there was a good turnout for each night. A celebrity bowling tournament was held on Sunday 16th and run by the HWMC bowling club with 16 teams entering, the proceeds from the tournament and bowling raffles was kindly donated to MS Waikato as part of the charity day event.

Overall the entire Charity week was a great success, MS Waikato increased it’s profile and built some positive relationships within the local community.

On Tuesday 8th November HWMC Event organiser - Terry Ryan presented to MS Waikato Trust chairperson - Mark Etheridge and Liz Hogan, a cheque for $19,000.

MS Waikato Trust would like to thank the Hamilton Workingmen’s club for choosing our organization as beneficiaries for their event.

HD World Congress Conference

11-14 September

On the 11-14 September, Liz Hogan and Tracy Hobbs attended the Huntington Disease World Congress Conference held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition centre in Australia. This event is held every 2 years with a different country playing host, in 2009 it was held in Vancouver.

The four day conference was a fantastic opportunity for people from all over the world to hear what is currently happening from HD organisations, people with Huntingtons, family members, scientists, researchers and other specialists and to gather information in relation to this disease.

HDYO - HD youth organisation : a site where kids, teenagers and young adults will be able to acquire reliable information, for young people, by young people, in a language that they can understand and relate to. All information is backed up by a huge international panel of experts. The site is due to Launch in 2012 www.hdyo.org

A large number of potential therapies are in progress and in the next two years they hope to see some novel treatments with really exciting drugs.

Scientists have given a drug to mice that does not get into the brain, however has had a major beneficial effect for HD-like symptoms.

Another suggested that the mutant huntingtin protein might have broad effects, not just in the brain, where they’re always looking, but in every tissue in the body.

And evidence that clumps of protein found in the brains of people who have died of all neurodegenerative diseases might not be bad but might be a coping mechanism.

You can view the full videoed OZ BUZZ sessions on www.hdbuzz.net Which provide an overview of the days events.

MS Waikato have the abstracts available for you to read, and would like to thank Span Trust and Maurice Bain for their sponsorship helping to send Liz and Tracy to the conference
